This group of paintings grew out of travel and observation of my local environment, but were directly inspired by the early color travel photos of Sergei Prokudin-Gorskii, who, in 1905, was sent out by the tsar to photograph the Russian empire. His photos range from the artistic, to the personal, to the blandly documentary, and it is interesting to consider what they have in common with travel photos of today. The paintings below are 3 inches tall (width variable) and painted in oil on panel from 2008-2017.
